One gets triggered when he hear the words “Follow your passion”. A lot of online gurus preach this concept as if success can be achieved through easy means.
“You don’t have to work hard if you love what you do and just follow your passion.”
As if following your passion is an easy thing to do. This is a lie told to you so that you can sign up for a course. Mastering any skill that is going to be of value to others takes a lot of effort. When you start doing something you will face boredom, frustration, anger from the lack of short-term progress, and burnout. Do you think expert musicians just enjoyed what they did when they started learning a new instrument? Do you think writers just enjoyed writing at the beginning of their writing career? Do you think app developers just enjoyed developing apps? You need to spend 10,000 hours doing something before you become an expert at a specific skill. That means 3 hours a day for 3 years.
When you spend 10,000 hours mastering a specific skill, be it performance marketing, content writing, video editing and so on, then you will get good at it. You have to put unimaginable level of effort over a period of years to get to a place where you become famous, powerful, and recognized. A lot of my school friends think that I became a digital marketer, built my brand and became successful because “I found my passion.” And they reason that they are not yet successful because they are “still searching for their passion.” As I found my passion like finding a random 10 rupee note on the street. I reply to them “Bro, you have no idea what I have gone through.” They put the blame on the lack of success on not finding their passion.
Remember, you will not “find your passion.” And your passion will not find you.
You find out what you are naturally good at, put in effort, work hard, have persistence, and go through boredom and frustration while becoming good at something. Once you become good at something – you will start seeing results out of it which will be a good payback for all the efforts that you have put in. You will get satisfaction from work well done, which requires effort. No effort is easy while you are doing the work.
It doesn’t take passion.
It takes discipline.
It requires determination, patience, trust in the process, and humility.
And remember, it is never going to be easy.
You can go from one thing to another trying to see what you are passionate about and you will be not passionate about anything, won’t become good at anything, and live a life of frustration.
Young people are being misled to believe that success can be effortless.
That if one finds their true passion, then one will have fun while doing it and get successful – only if you just find the right thing for you.
No one cares what you love to do.
Seriously.
Find something that you want. It can be anything. People will give you what you want when you give them what they want.
I did not master digital marketing because digital marketing is my “passion.” I mastered digital marketing because people need digital marketing.
I did my research and found out that’s what people want.
To be honest my true passion is riding motorcycles, listening to psy trance music and just watching TV. I cannot follow that and become successful.
Everything takes some serious effort – and one must do it.
Yes, I have become better at it and I have started enjoying the results of it, but saying that I enjoy doing it might be the wrong way to put it.
You get my drift?
Two books that have inspired this pattern of thought in me are “Mastery” by Robert Greene and “Ultra Learning” by Scott Young.
If you want to go deeper into this topic, read the above two books. Stop scrolling through Instagram and try to get gyan from 30-second reels.
Reading books also take a lot of effort, but that’s when you truly learn.
What do you think?
Do you think boredom, frustration, and tedium are needed to master a skill that the world wants?
Or are you going to still keep searching for your “passion”?
