Everyone heard the famous quote of Dr. Kalam that “Dream is not that you see in sleep, dream is something that does not let you sleep”. But very few people really understand this and applies this in their life. The former student of S. P. College, Pune, Dr. Sagar Kalane is an example of such a person who understand this very well and his journey is inspiring many students in his village. Dr. Sagar Kalane completed his Ph.D in mathematics with lot of struggles in his life. He belongs to rural background with very few opportunities for a good education. He was born and brought up in a farmer’s family in Bopgaon village of Pune district. His struggle for life started when he was in 4th standard. He used to help his mother in the dairy farming till 10th standard. He also sold sugarcane juice at bus stands for four years.
Dr. Kalane is a former beneficiary of the Students Welfare Association (SWA),Pune, who helps poor and needy students from rural background. He completed his graduation by doing earn and learn programs from SWA, in which he took tutions and some other work like outdoor catering, distributing light bills etc. He got economical support from Disha Pariwar Charitable Trust, Pune during B.Sc and M.Sc., because of that he could concentrate on study and got admission in IIT Madras.
Dr. Sagar Kalane is an alumnus of two of the reputed academic institutes in India, namely, IISER Mohali and IIT Madras. He received Ph.D. in Mathematics from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali. Prior to that, Dr. Kalane completed his M.Sc.(Maths) from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. He qualified many national level competitive exams. Dr. Kalane secured an All India Rank 95 in IIT-JAM, which is a national level science entrance exam for admission to M.Sc. in IITs, IISERs and IISc.
CSIR-UGC NET is considered as one of the toughest exams in India, with a success ratio of merely 6%. Adding yet another feather to his cap, Dr. Kalane secured an All India Rank 70 in UGC NET exam and received Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Until recently, he was Post-Doctoral Fellow at IISER, Pune. During his Ph.D he got invitation from IHES, Paris and University of Warwick, London to attend some conferences. Dr. Kalane is working on the subject ‘Topology and geometry’ in which he got publications of research articles in international journals like Geometriae Dedicata and Forum Math.
Many students in India (mostly from rural areas) are unaware of opportunities in Science. He wants to show them the right direction in their educational path. He has a strong faith that hard work and dedication are the only keys to success.
